Dear Fellow Conservative,
Pete Nelson is currently seeking your vote for Minnesota Republican Party Deputy Chair. As you likely know, Pete served in the Legislature two terms as the State Rep. serving Chisago County. I served in the Legislature that same time and had first-hand experience working with him legislatively and locally as a GOP BPOU volunteer.
Prior to his election to the Legislature, and in the years following, Pete has volunteered countless hours for the local BPOU and GOP candidates. He has been instrumental each year in planning and pulling off one of the best BPOU Reagan Day Dinner fundraisers in the state. Each year hundreds attend, and thousands of dollars raised to elect Republican candidates to office.
During his tenure as a Legislator Pete doggedly pursued conservative causes. It was during his years in the Minnesota House of Representatives that we passed
- Concealed Carry Reform
- Pro-Life Woman’s Right to Know, and Positive Alternatives legislation
- Strengthened Personal Property Rights with Eminent Domain limitations
These and many other accomplishments were made during his time as Representative.
Pete has a deep commitment to our Republican Party, our Republican Ideals, our Conservative Candidates and our local BPOU organizations. He has volunteered countless hours for our GOP party and GOP candidates. He would make a wonderful Deputy Chair for our State Party organization.

1.

In February of 2006, my husband, Brian and I moved from Hudson, Wisconsin to Taylors Falls. Crossing the St. Croix River makes a big difference in how politics are conducted. After 45 years of Wisconsin politics we were both ready to retire and decided not to get involved in Minnesota.

Then came the devastating election of 2006. I needed to know what happened. I invited two conservative friends, the chairman of the county organization and out-going Representative Pete Nelson to my living room to talk things over. It became clear that changes had to be made. Pete took charge and as chairman of the Chisago County Republican Party Constitution Committee, offered constitutional changes (later ratified by convention) to create a committee called, “Campaign Coordinators.” The CC started to organize the precincts. By the 2008 elections, the changes started to reap benefits.

In 2009, Pete Nelson led the Constitution Committee in rewriting the entire constitution.

The new constitution allows many more people to have a voice in the Chisago County Republican Party. The CCRP has grown in participation from a handful to an auditorium full. In 2011, the CCRP stands ready to make a big difference in conservative politics in 2012.

Since that meeting in my living room, Pete Nelson has been a driving force to make the CCRP a bold, innovative and responsible political party, leading the way to victory in eastern Minnesota. Pete Nelson will bring those same qualities to the State Party. As Vice Chairman, Pete Nelson will bring victory to Republicans in Minnesota.

"I heartily endorse Peter Nelson for the position of Deputy Chair of the Minnesota Republican Party for the reasons I enumerate: 1) Peter grew up in an atmosphere of hard work, commitment to personal integrity and public service. Peter's father, the late Howard Nelson, a successful business owner, gave years of distinguished political service at the local level and as a Minnesota State Representative and a Minnesota State Senator. From parental example Peter learned the importance of word-as-bond and the necessity of earning the trust of the public through demonstrated personal integrity. 2) Peter owned, operated and managed the family business for years while making time available for public service in many capacities including as mayor of his city and culminating in his election as a State Representative. For years Peter Nelson has been active in the Chisago county Republican Party and has provided exemplary leadership from Precinct to State Convention and leadership at the state level. Peter Nelson has brought organizational skills and leadership and unlimited commitment to the successful reorganization of the Chisago County Republican Party. The Minnesota Republican Party needs the organizational skills, the leadership qualities, the experience and the dedication to Republican principles that Peter Nelson will provide without reservation.

A little over 20 years ago I met Pete Nelson while flooding the Lindstrom outdoor ice rinks. At that time and before Pete had been heavily involved in the local hockey program as a coach as well as helping maintain the local ice rinks. I recognized him since I had previously seen him while I was shopping at the local Community Meat Market which he owned and operated. During times working at the ice rinks, conversation would invariable evolve to discussion about how nice it would be if we had an indoor ice arena, since outdoor ice was weather dependent and unpredictable. When we were unable to skate outdoors we try to rent indoor ice time but would typically have to travel at least 30-40 miles to an indoor arena.

Unbeknownst to me, Pete Nelson was one of the people that took the bull by the horns and helped organize a group to build an indoor arena. Pete has the ability of identifying individual skills that people have and leveraging those skills to advance an agenda. It was not long after I met Pete that his group launched an effort to raise contributions to build the indoor arena. I became part of the funding raising committee at that time and subsequently began working closely with Pete and others in the group. What impressed me most about Pete was his high energy level, his community and business contacts and his organizing skills. Pete provided the can do attitude and whenever a significant obstacle appeared he was there to make sure it did not derail our objective. He convinced me and others to become part of the group as a member of the board of directors which would provide direction and man hours to make sure that the arena was successful.

The indoor ice arena that was built was structured by Pete's group as a 501(c)3 non profit corporation. To my knowledge this $3 million dollar plus arena is the only indoor ice arena in Minnesota that was built without any assistance by taxpayer dollars. It is a testimonial to the hard work and tenacity of people like Pete that enabled others to accomplish what most people saw as an impossible task.

In this day and age when many ask what government can do for them, Pete Nelson is one that stands out of the crowd to demonstrate what people can do for themselves and how one individual can make a tremendous difference.

I congratulate Pete on his success and endorse him for the position of Deputy Chair of the Minnesota Republican Party.

4. Now that our caucus and convention planning are in full swing and I see the participation from all corners of Chisago County, I reflect that it wasn't always this way. We have gone from a handful of volunteers completing required functions to a BPOU organization that is locked and loaded for the upcoming election cycle. We have our incumbents running for Minnesota House, Senate and Congress. We are capable as any in Minnesota - and the DFL knows it.

Your contribution to our success has been pivotal. Your candidacy in 2002 showed us that with proper focus a well run campaign could be successful in Chisago County even though we had gone three decades without an election success. By chairing the Constitution Committee your vision of a broad-based delegation of duties has brought the Republican energy we so sorely needed. Your leadership as a delegate to the Eighth District State Convention and State Central has shown the leadership that attracts Republican activism.

Your fingerprints are on every corner of our organization, we would not be in this position without you. I appreciate your friendship and the mentorship of our BPOU.

I have known Peter Nelson a long time and of his leadership and attention to detail.

Pete has long been a leader, but I have been lucky enough to work with him and others the last five

years in a very close and collaborative way, building a politically active team in Chisago County.

Five years ago Pete, as a Republican, student of history and a businessman, knew it was time to turn and pivot politically and he concluded that new approaches needed to be tried to build our Republican Party.

Pete used his leadership skills to identify our local political activism structural problems and start to build and organize a unified team approach. He developed operational structures, such as changes in our constitution, campaign coordination and six standing committees of the county party, that have opened up more doors for involving more Chisago County residents in the Local Republican Party.

Since this process started, Peter has played a major role leading our Ex Committee and working side by side with others on our committees, as we have restructured not only our local operating constitution, but also many other operating procedures. Pete has spent considerable time on events, fundraising and recruiting and training candidates how to run for local offices.

Pete has encouraged a balance of new volunteers with experienced volunteers on our operating committees and has the patience to let them develop their plans and activities as he offered assistance as needed. Bringing in new energy to the local party has been fundamentally important to our efforts. What we have accomplished recently in Chisago County is nothing short of a complete turnaround, with involvement that any area in the state would be happy to have.

I believe Pete, having been a State Rep, has much to offer to the state at large and has been in the middle of

a local metamorphosis which he has had a firsthand part in. He demonstrates a vision on how to carry this message of building volunteer activism that can change local politics from the bottom up everywhere in the state.

With the MN GOP organizing around a powerful PR message and a legislative strategy that

is coordinated with our elected officials and an expanded base of activism, Minnesota will have a different political future from the past.

Pete Nelson can help deliver on that future vision.
